Do's and Don't's of Renting a Tux

January 26, 2007 By Jane Hynes, Princeton Online

Dos:

Do look for a tux provider with multiple locations. A store with locations nationwide provides the most convenience for your traveling friends.

Do rent from a store that carries a large in-house inventory. In the unlikely event that something happens to the tux you rented, your provider will have plenty of backup.

Do visit your store 3 to 5 months before the wedding. For the most efficient use of your time, call and make an appointment with a consultant who can take your measurements and help you choose a style.

Do some research to find a style you like and are comfortable with and bring pictures with you to your appointment.

Do ask your consultant to choose styles that accent your body type and to choose the right accessories that suit the style you have chosen.

Do budget correctly - plan on spending $150 per person. Do remember to factor in additional accessories, like cufflinks.

Do schedule a fitting one week before the wedding. Last minute alterations are normal and necessary.

Do narrow down who will be wearing a tux. All members of the wedding party should choose matching formalwear. Fathers, brothers and ushers can dress as you do.

Don'ts:

Don't wait until the last minute to rent your tux. Leave time for mishaps, alterations or style changes.

Don't forget to consider how your out of town men will be fitted. If there is not a store outlet near them, they should send in their measurements well ahead of time.

Don't let anyone send you self-measurements. It is important to have a good fit. Tell them they must go to a professional tailor to be measured.

Don't assume that your groomsmen will be responsible enough to remember all dates and schedules regarding the tux rental. Keep them updated with emails and calls so they meet all the necessary deadlines.

Don't forget to return your tux the day after the wedding. It is best to give this responsibility to someone in your wedding party because it will be the last thing on your mind.
