On Sunday, June 10, 2012 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm at Mercer County Community College, Holocaust survivors and their families (the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations) will be “Gathering” for this historic state-wide event. The theme of the event is to generate activity among the generations of the Shoah toward continuing to tell the family’s Holocaust experience. The main purpose of this event is to inspire participants to learn about their own family experiences, to educate the future generations about the atrocities of the Holocaust and genocide and share the need for tolerance and acceptance of all people.
To begin the event, there will be the opportunity for survivors to meet and greet others from their European countries of origin. There will also be storytelling for younger children about the topic of prejudice, bias, and bullying. Michael Berenbaum, who is a renowned Holocaust historian, writer, researcher, lecturer, and teacher, will be the keynote speaker. Berenbaum has won two academy awards as Co-Producer and Historical Consultant on Holocaust topics. A panel of generations of The Shoah will discuss some ways that they have already documented their families’ stories. A social worker will be available to discuss some of the issues that arise when living with someone who went through the trauma of genocide. Many dignitaries have been invited to this event and the opportunity for the survivors and generations to meet and greet will be available.
This event is made possible through the efforts of the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, New Jersey Generations of the Shoah Organizations, New Jersey Jewish Family Service Agencies, New Jersey Network of Holocaust/Genocide Centers, and Mercer County Community College. The event will be held in the Student Dining Hall at their West Windsor Campus. To register for this event, survivors and families should e-mail holocaust@doe.state.nj.us and include the total number of attendees from their family.
