Multifaith 9-11 Afternoon of Reflection in Trenton

UMIO [United Mercer Interfaith Organization for clergy and congregations of all faiths] invites the public to an Afternoon of Reflection on Sep 11, 2011 from 2:30 – 4 pm.  Beginning on the NJ State House steps with prayers for this solemn occasion led by Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders, the program will continue in the NJ State Museum auditorium, approx 450 feet north on W. State Street. There will be brief reflections on paths taken and not taken by our country during the past ten years followed by children born in September 2001 sharing their hopes for the future.

UMIO’s 9-11 committee co-chair, Rabbi Donna Kirshbaum of Congregation String of Pearls in Princeton, notes that the event has two aims. “First, UMIO wants to show support in a really public way for the Muslim communities in the Mercer Country area. We also want to reflect on the past ten years and how, at this point, we can make our country more secure for all its residents. Commemoration of the thousands lost on Sep 11, 2001 and in two wars since then is a sacred duty and we hope that all participants will take advantage of the many services and programs being offered next week in order to fulfill that duty. What UMIO plans to offer is a sacred pause – a break from the demands of our daily lives in order to reflect deeply, together, on where we’ve just come from and where to go from here. We like to sum up our intentions with the words one nation, many faiths, with liberty and justice for all.”

Free parking will be available adjacent to and behind the NJ State Museum at 205 W. State Street 08608. Admission to the museum's 9-11 commemorative exhibit is also free and open to attendees from 12 - 5 pm.
