String of Pearls Invites the Public to Celebrate Arrival of New Ark September 9, 2011
String of Pearls to Debut New Ark
Princeton, New Jersey, August 25, 2011
Event: Friday Evening Service and Celebration of New Ark Date: September 9, 2011 Time: 7:00 p.m. Location: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton, 50 Cherry Hill Road (just off Rt.206N), Princeton
String of Pearls, the Princeton area's Reconstructionist synagogue, invites members of the community to join the congregation members on Friday evening, September 9 as they welcome their new ark.
Acclaimed poet and teacher Liz Socolow has written a special poem for the occasion and Bruce Gershkowitz will share the remarkable story that inspired the search that turned an elegant antique into sacred space. There will be singing and schmoozing and celebrating in addition to a soulful erev Shabbat [Friday evening] service for all.
String of Pearls Rabbi Donna Kirshbaum says that while she is grateful that her community is "light on its feet" and not burdened with a building fund, "even a community such as ours, committed as we are to living lightly, needs the experience of being home." She credits Hightstown resident Gershkowitz with providing the congregation with its "hearth and focal point -- a handsome new ark for our Torah."
