U.S.1 Cooperative began in 1973, when a small group of  poets got together informally to share their poems and their love of poetry.  The group has persisted as the longest running poets' cooperative in America. Writers travel from as far away as Cranford and Bernardsville, Cherry Hill and Milltown to come together weekly, most often in the Princeton area, for poetry, camaraderie and useful critique.

Some of the original members have gone on to become major poets, and some are still active members of the Cooperative today.  A number of  members who have moved to other parts of the country keep in touch by submitting their work to U.S. 1 Worksheets, the annual publication of the Cooperative.

The Cooperative co-sponsors (with the Princeton Public Library and the Princeton Arts Council) a series of poetry readings (U.S.1 Poets Invite) at the Princeton Public Library. Readings feature U.S.1 poets and non-member poets actively engaged in their craft.  

There is no formal membership, only the willingness of participants to share their work.
