Stream Clean-up in Princeton a Success 393 Pounds of Trash Removed from D&R Canal area

April 30, 2012 (Princeton, NJ) – On April 29th community members joined with the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association – Central New Jersey’s first environmental group – and Princeton Environmental Commission to clean up D&R Canal as part of the Watershed Association’s 6th Annual Stream Cleanup.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon 44 volunteers from area schools, businesses and homes collected 393 pounds of trash and debris left by flood, wind and thoughtless littering from the D&R Canal, linked to the Millstone River.

“This is the sixth year Princeton Township has participated in our Stream Cleanup event,” said Jim Waltman, executive director of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association – Central New Jersey’s first environmental group. “We are grateful for the volunteers who help clean up our streams and are reminded that choices we make every day – from spreading chemicals on our lawn to littering - have a big impact on the health of our water and environment.”

Some of the unusual items removed from the site included a baby bath, an oar, and clothes. The most prevalent items pulled were water bottles, beer cans & food wrappers.

Over three weekends in April, volunteers from 11 towns and four counties rolled up their sleeves to keep our lakes, rivers and streams clean and healthy. In addition to Princeton, the other 10 towns that took part in the Cleanup were Cranbury, East Windsor, Franklin Township, Hightstown, Hillsborough, Hopewell Twp, Millstone Township, Monroe Township, South Brunswick and West Windsor.  To see the results go to https://www.thewatershed.org/advocacy/stream-clean-ups/.
