Better Beginnings’  Early Learning Curriculum

revolves around the goals of helping each child develop a positive self-image, and encouraging families and children to reach their full potential.  The bilingual (Spanish/English) multicultural curriculum is provided in a safe, healthy, caring learning environment that is child-oriented and developmentally appropriate.

On the premise that children learn by doing, and that success breeds success, learning centers provide the opportunity for the child to interact with materials, ideas, other students and adults, based on teachers' observations and recordings of each child's special interests and developmental progress.    The spirit of inquiry is fostered through problem-solving and discovery opportunities.

Activities are provided to match each student’s developing abilities and to stimulate interest and understanding.  The thematic curriculum is developed around the needs, interests, and developmental levels of the students, and is implemented around the observation and understanding of each child as a unique person with an individual pattern and timing of growth, individual personality, learning style, and family background.

Learning centers include block play, discovery table, role playing, music, building, art, manipulatives, and book center.  Activities to encourage physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth are offered through an integrated, cross-curriculum approach, to include language development, math concepts, visual and auditory perception, health and safety, socialization, peacemaking, reading appreciation, science, water play, rhythm and movement, gross and fine motor control.  Because young children need years of play with real objects and events before they are able to understand the meaning of symbols such as letters and numbers, activities are  concrete, real, and relevant to the lives of young children.  The schedule provides a balance of rest and active movement for children throughout the program day.

Pictures and stories are used frequently to build upon children's real experiences.  Multicultural materials, pictures, books, and supplies are offered to encourage respect for self and others, and acceptance and appreciation of differences and similarities among them.
