HPV Vaccine & Winter Flu Updates from HiTOPS
There has been a lot of discussion recently in the media about vaccinating youth against HPV (human papillomavirus).
The Society for Adolescent Medicine and Health recommends targeted vaccination of 11 and 12-year-old male and female patients, and catch-up vaccinations for all patients 13-26 years who have not yet received the vaccination.
HPV vaccination has been recommended since 2006, and since that time no serious safety concerns have been noted after millions of delivered doses. Vaccine administration is ideal at the 11-12 year visit, well before most adolescents have engaged in sexual contact or experimentation that puts them at risk for acquiring HPV infection.
Each year, about 12,000 women get cervical cancer in the U.S. Almost all of these cancers are HPV-associated. Other cancers associated with HPV infection include: vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, penile cancer and oropharyngeal cancer.
HiTOPS offers the Gardasil vaccine for HPV to all young adults aged 11+. Call (609) 683 5155 x211 to book an appointment.
