Family Nature Programs
Saturdays 3:30-5:00
New Jersey Audubon’s Plainsboro Preserve
Welcome to the New Jersey Audubon’s Family Nature Programs. Each program is designed to explore nature through a theme. A portion of each program may be spent outdoors building a deeper connection to the natural world through fun and informative activities. We provide a highly trained environmental educator for each of our programs. Join us and create memories that will last a lifetime. Educational and fun, these Family Nature Programs are perfect for beginning naturalists and their families ages 6 to adult. Cost: members, $3 per person; nonmembers, $5 per person (unless otherwise noted). Pre-registration is encouraged. (609) 897-9400

THE SOUNDS OF NATURE
Saturday, July 16th
3:30 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.
Every species of frog, toad, and bird has their own songs and calls. This is a great way to identify animals as you can often “see” more wildlife with your ears than with your eyes. We will go for a hike and hear who is around and may even try our hand at imitating them.
THE JOY OF SUMMER STORIES
Saturday, July 23rd
Come and join Teacher Naturalist Corey Sperling in the retelling of Native American stories. Go back in time and understand the natural world through the eyes of the Native Americans. Stories will have a summer theme and will take place both inside the nature center and outside on the trails of the Preserve.
SNAKE WRANGLING
Saturday, July 30th
Snakes are cool creatures and not just because they are cold blooded! Our naturalist will demonstrate how to safely handle some of our captive snakes while sharing information about their life history. Then we will head outside and look at suitable snake habitat for these misunderstood and important animals.
SPECIMEN OF THE DAY
Saturday, August 6th
If I could share one secret for helping you find the path to becoming a naturalist, then it would be how to collect natural specimens. Come join us for a hands-on experience to uncover the secrets of plaster casts, fur, feathers, skins, and skulls. Then we will hit the trail and look for signs and clues of animals on the preserve.
DRAGONS OF THE SUMMER SKIES
Saturday, August 13th
Dragonflies prowl the humid summer air as predators on the wing. August is a perfect month to observe these fascinating insects as they dart and flit through the Preserve. Join our resident “Dragonfly Guy” Associate Naturalist Chris Magarelli on this hike to the hunting grounds of the Dragonfly!
FIELD TRIPS & PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND TEENS
Please pre-register ten days in advance with a payment of $10 for NJA members or $15 for nonmembers. Checks must be made out to “NJ Audubon”. Send payment to Plainsboro Preserve, 80 Scotts Corner Road, Cranbury, NJ 08512, or pay with a credit card over the phone.
INSECTS FOR ADULTS
9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.
Insects are fascinating creatures. Join Associate Naturalist Chris Magarelli for an insect exploration at the Plainsboro Preserve. We will start on our back deck looking for moths that are still hanging around from the night lights from the prior evening before we head out and find dragonflies, praying mantis, and more. Bring your digital camera and binoculars to help with tricky identifications and to capture the moment.
