NAMI MERCER OFFERS FREE EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH EMOTIONAL OR BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES

Lawrenceville, NJ – On Tuesday, March 1, NAMI Mercer will begin its spring semester of “Family-to-Family,” a free, 12-week education course for family members and caregivers of adults living with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders and borderline personality disorder.  Course participants gain vital information, insight and understanding of their loved one that many describe as life-changing.

Family-to-Family provides caregivers with communication, problem solving techniques, coping mechanisms, and the self-care skills needed to deal with their loved one’s mental illness as well as its impact on the family.

The class meets for 2 ½ hours each week. Topics covered include: insight into how one’s mental illness affects relatives,  looking into brain function and how it relates to mental illness, family members advocating for treatment, medications and latest treatment options,  coping with worry and stress, and the importance of taking care of yourself.

The curriculum was designed by NAMI mental-health professionals and is taught by trained volunteers who have experienced mental illness or behavioral challenges in their own families.

Classes will be held on twelve Tuesday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm at two locations:  the NAMI Center of Mercer County, 3371 Brunswick Pike, Suite 124 (adjacent to Mercer Mall) in Lawrenceville and Galilee Baptist Church, 440 Martin Luther King Blvd, Trenton, New Jersey 08618. Although the education series is free, registration is required. For more information or to register, call 609-799-8994 or email home@namimercer.org.
