Evolving Landscapes: an Artist’s Experience at Stuart’s Considine Gallery Works by Jennifer Hawkes

PRINCETON, NJ, January 6, 2012 – Artist Jennifer Hawkes draws inspiration for her paintings from the landscapes around her as they evolve through the seasons. She strives to give equal attention to the evolution of a visual idea, to deconstruct her painting practice and examine how a composition changes from initial inspiration to a finished painting.

            Similar to the Impressionists, Ms. Hawkes’ focus as a painter is more on the visceral and emotional responses derived from nature rather than a literal depiction of a scene. She works from photographs or studies done on location or “en plein air.” Her finished paintings emphasize or exaggerate colors, shapes and patterns created by light and shadow. She hopes to capture fleeting moments of grace that appear for a blink of an eye and then disappear.

            The public is invited to view Ms. Hawkes’ work in the exhibit “Evolving Landscapes: an Artist’s Experience” on display at Stuart’s Considine Gallery, from January 22 through March 28, 2012. The gallery is open from 8:00am – 6:00pm Monday through Friday when school is in session.

The opening reception is Sunday, January 22, from 3:30PM – 5:30PM

            Jennifer Hawkes is a native of Princeton, New Jersey. She graduated from the School at the Art Institute of Chicago with a Masters in Art Therapy. After school Jennifer lived in San Francisco where she worked in the design technology industries and studied with several recognized California landscape artists working on location, or “plein air.”

            Jennifer completed two commissioned murals at the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx in 2009 and had her first two solo shows in 2010 in Princeton.
