Teens Can Volunteer in Appalachia With PUMC Youth Program
Youth in grades 9 to 12 are being invited to participate in Princeton United Methodist Church’s annual service trip with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). “The PUMC youth program welcomes all teens of all backgrounds, church members and non-church members alike, to participate in the life-changing experience of the ASP,” says Annie Pasqua, Director of Youth Ministries. Preparation for PUMC’s 2011 ASP trip is an eight-month process that includes fundraisers, learning Appalachian culture and the poverty many face, basic construction skills, and the meaning of service to others. Last year’s 42-person team (29 youth and 13 adults) spent a week repairing homes in Dickenson County, VA. Nationally, more than 13,000 youth spend a week of their lives volunteering for the ASP. The Princeton church has been participating since the mid-‘70s, shortly after the program was founded. PUMC also welcomes adults who wish to volunteer, once a month, in an affordable housing project in Trenton, collaborating with Isles, Inc., to repair and renovate homes. For more information about either program, visit www.princetonumc.org or call 609-924-2613. PUMC is a diverse congregation whose members come from many surrounding communities, backgrounds, and faith histories. It is located at Nassau and Vandeventer in Princeton.
