Princeton Day School Exhibits the Work of Our Own: Art Department Faculty Exhibition at the Gallery October 17 - November 10, 2011

Princeton Day School is delighted to exhibit the works of our own art department in the Anne Reid ’72 Art Gallery from October 17 through November 10, 2011. There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, October 18th from 11:30-1:30  pm.

This exhibition will address several contemporary themes in paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics and sculpture created by Caryn Blum, David Burkett, Eileen Hohmuth-Lemonick, Jerry Hirniak, Debbie Hillmanno, Chris Maher, Vincent Moreno, Susan Reichlin and Stephanie Stuefer.  “With a long tradition of excellence in the arts at Princeton Day School, this exhibition offers the opportunity to see the level of depth and talent from our nine art faculty members,” remarked Gallery Director, Jody Erdman.  “We invite the public to be inspired by the variety of influences offered at the school as our faculty members continuously evolve.”

Upper School Architecture teacher David Burkett's two works are inspired by his experience this past July working in France in the secluded Ardeche region of the Rhone-Alps. His investigations of this environment through sketching and painting and architecture resulted in his enquiry of a site through sustained observation and recording, as evidenced in both his small sketchbook and his two large-scale works. Mr. Burkett’s experience was made possible by the Johnston Faculty Enrichment Award, awarded by Princeton Day School.

Furniture Design teacher Chris Maher will exhibit furniture and sculpture using maple, ostrich skin, cocobola and lambskin after an artist's residency this summer at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson. Upper School Photography teacher Eileen Hohmuth-Lemonick will exhibit photographs taken on a tea plantation in Darjeeling, India where she and three other photographers recently traveled. Lower School Art teacher Caryn Blum’s three-dimensional works mimic digital pixels or mutating cells as she examines the space between painting and sculpture, macrocosms and  microcosms, moderation and excess.  Middle School Art teacher Susan Reichlin will exhibit images created from direct visual observation, with an emphasis on color, combination of shapes, and play of light on objects. Painting and Media teacher Jerry Hirniak will exhibit work from a series which investigates the structure of film, memory and perception. The process involves projecting a film onto the canvas and then, through multiple viewings, recording observations with marks to record time into a still event.

This exhibition is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday when school is in session, and by appointment on weekends. For an appointment, please call (609) 924-6700 or visit www.pds.org. The Anne Reid ’72 Art Gallery is part of the Princeton Day School arts wing dedicated to photography, ceramics, architecture and dance, as well as woodworking, set-building and performance art spaces.
