Dialectics: the interplay of image and word at Stuart’s Considine Gallery Work by Susan Rizzo ’69 and Allison Gratton ’00
Dialectics is from the Greek word dialektikos, meaning of conversation, an intellectual exchange of ideas; the relationship between two interacting forces or elements.
Life is a constant exchange of give and take, ebb and flow, ups and downs. Balance is found in the epicenter of this cyclic and rhythmic movement. It is in this space that painter Susan Rizzo and poet Allison Gratton strive to communicate the human experience through the inherent relationship between image and word.
Susan Rizzo ‘69 and Allison Gratton ’00 are both graduates of Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart. They are the first mother-daughter alumnae of Stuart.
Susan is a figurative and abstract painter. She uses the figure and surrounding atmosphere – created with thick layers of texture – to convey the emotional and spiritual facets of life. Her work has been accepted to the Mercer County Artists show (2003 and 2005), the Trenton Museum’s 28th Ellarslie Open (2010), The Salon show at Artworks in Trenton (2010), and the 25th International Show at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (2011)
Allison is a certified Vinyasa Yoga instructor and Raw Vegan Chef. Although creating amazing culinary dishes is her main passion, she has never abandoned her love of the written word. As a poet, she draws upon experiences big and small to write from a place of truth in order to inspire beauty and celebrate life.
The public is invited to view the body of work that began as a simple collaboration between artists to motivate and support one another’s craft and then naturally evolved into a conversation about what we see and what we say, what we think and what we feel. “Dialectics: the interplay of image and word,” is on display at Stuart’s Considine Gallery, from October 2 through November 27, 2011. The gallery is open from 8:00am – 6:00pm Monday through Friday when school is in session.
The opening reception is Sunday, October 2, from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
