Yes We Can! Food Drives at the Princeton Farmers' Market - August 13th, September 24th, October 22nd, and November 12th! Yes We Can! Food Drives is a volunteer group that works to alleviate hunger in Mercer County by holding year-round food drives. All donations will be collected on behalf of the families and individuals who use food pantries operated by The Crisis Ministry of Mercer County. We ask farmers' market shoppers to either purchase fresh produce from the market on behalf of Yes We Can! or donate non-perishable food items. Yes We Can! Food Drives is happy to accept cash donations, and will be used to purchase additional food items. More info

The Princeton Human Services Department is seeking donors for its 6th Annual Book Bag and School Supplies Drive. The drive benefits Princeton children who are low-income and in need of school supplies and new book bags. For the past six years, the Princeton Human Services Commission, municipal employees, local businesses, organizations and residents have donated book bags and school supplies that have benefited up to 100 Princeton children. The items are distributed to children from low-income families who attend the Princeton Public Schools and are entering kindergarten through sixth grade. If you would like to participate in this year’s drive, you may drop off donations at the Princeton Human Services office on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office is located in the former borough hall at One Monument Drive. The deadline for donations is August 14, 2015. If you have questions, please call our office at (609) 688-2055 or send an e-mail to eneira@princetonnj.gov.

Princeton Merchants Association (PMA) launches
Town-wide Plastic Bag Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling Effort. The effort will encourage merchants to "Ask First" if customers need a bag, encourage residents to "Bring Your Own Bag"(BYOB) and encourage the use of bins throughout town and homes for our residents and businesses to "Collect and Recycle" plastic bags. Current participants include McCaffrey's Food Market, the Princeton University Store, the Whole Earth Center, Craft Cleaners, Sustainable Princeton, the Princeton Senior Resource Center and the Municipality of Princeton. Utilizing Trex Recycling via McCaffrey's, this effort will initially place up to ten new containers at convenient locations around town. More importantly it allows for collection and recycling of more than just single use plastic shopping bags. Residents will also be able to recycle newspaper bags, bread bags, food storage bags and other plastic film such as dry cleaning bags and that which holds bulk items together. More info

Anonymous $10,000 Gift to Crisis Ministry Inspires the “50-Family Challenge” - An anonymous gift of $10,000 made to the Crisis Ministry’s Housing Stability Services will help more struggling families to stay in their homes rather than face homelessness. The donors who made the contribution also aim to raise awareness of the economic instability that low-income families experience in Mercer County while challenging fellow area residents to contribute another $15,000. Recent donations made to the 50-Family Challenge have brought the Crisis Ministry to nearly half its $25,000 challenge goal. Learn more about the Crisis Ministry’s services at thecrisisministry.org or by calling 609-396-9355.
