“Storm Seas, Stormy Souls” is the theme for The Princeton Festival’s lecture series on Richard Wagner and his Die Fliegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman), the centerpiece of this year’s Princeton Festival. A celebrated group of four speakers will address the man, the legend, and the opera in a free series beginning on June 5 in public libraries around the Princeton area.
Leading off is James Camner, music antiquarian and author, on Wednesday June 5 at the Mary Jacobs Library in Rocky Hill. “The premiere of Der fliegende Hollander and its Scandalous Cast” sets the scene for the ground-breaking new opera’s opening night in 1843.
Marianne Grey well known docent at the Princeton University Art Museum will present “Over and Under the Stormy Seas”, an exploration of the legends of the sea’s mysteries, of which the Flying Dutchman is one, as expressed through art over the ages. Ms. Grey’s talk can be heard on Tuesday June 11 at 7pm at the Princeton Public Library or on Thursday June 27 at 7pm at the Lawrence Library.
“Music for Stormy Seas and Souls” is the topic for Rider University professor Timothy Urban’s discussion of the inspiration and setting for this early Wagnerian opera which was to change the world of opera. The talk will be presented twice, Saturday June 15 at 3pm at West Windsor Library, and Monday June 17 at 7pm at the Princeton Public Library.
On Sunday June 30 at 11am the pianist, composer and Wagner expert Jeffrey Swann will speak on and illustrate on the piano themes from his topic, “Stormy Soul: How did Wagner find his Muse?” at the Princeton Public Library. The talk by Mr. Swann, professor at NYU, is jointly sponsored by the Wagner Society of New York, and addresses how and why the composer broke new ground for his own work and opera itself with The Flying Dutchman.
The Princeton Festival’s production of Der fliengende Hollander will be presented on Saturday June 22 at 8pm and again on Sunday June 30 at 3pm. The part of the Flying Dutchman will be sung by Mark Delavan, acclaimed as Wotan in the Metropolitan Opera’s recent Ring cycle. Soprano Indra Thomas will be Senta, the woman who offers him redemption from his curse to sail the seas forever, and Richard Bernstein, a Met regular, will sing the part of sea captain Daland. Other principals include Jason Wickson, Dana Beth Miller, and Alex Richardson.
