Hanukkah, the festival of lights, celebrated for 8 nights, has a rich repertoire of text and music focusing on the miraculous and courageous victory of Judah Maccabee and his followers against King Antiochus and the Greek conquerors. Hazzan Art Katlin adds, “Hanukkah also focuses on the rededication of the defiled temple, due to the valiant efforts of the Maccabbees, along with the miracle of the one small vial of oil that remained lit for 8 days. We celebrate their bravery and their pursuit of freedom.
