Feb. 13th, 2008 Guest speaekr: Roz Rosenblum

On the faculty at Rutgers University and a member of the Professional Women Photographers of New York, Roz is a past president of South Shore Camera Club on Long Island. She has presented at The Photographic Society of America's Foto Fest, in NYC and NECCC at U Mass at Amherst. She has exhibited at such prestigious galleries as The Cork Gallery in Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. Roz will speak on "How Judges Judge".
Jan. 9th, 2008 Guest speaker: Kate Ware

Kate is Curator of Photography at The Philadelphia Art Museum. She is well known to PPC members as the juror in photography shows at Phillips Mill, Perkins, Noyes Museum, etc. and  as the curator and innovator for many photography expositions at The Philadelphia Art Museum. She will discuss : "The Life of Lee Miller", fashion model, fashion photographer, surreal photojournalist, and war photographer and how Miller applied what she had learned about Surrealism in Paris to a highly surreal situation.

PHOTOGRAPHS ON PAINTINGS
Robert teaches Art and Art History at Southampton High School, Southampton, Long Island. He is an active photographer with many exhibitions; his work incorporating photo images into mixed media paintings through extension of elements of the photograph by paint. His latest photograph/paintings on street life, doorways and bicycles of lower Manhattan are presently on view at the O. K. Harris Gallery 383 West Broadway in SOHO.

Nov. 14th, 2007 Our guest speaker was JASON FRANCISCO.
RECONSIDERING DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY. Jason teaches photography and critical studies at Rutgers and Stanford Universities. His just published book on documentary photography, Far From Zion (published by Stanford University Press 2007) suggests new approaches to documentary photography using photographs to circulate social meaning, (not merely to capture it), has been critically acclaimed.

We are pleased to announce a private tour at the Princeton University Art Museum for members of the Princeton Photography Club on Sunday November 4th at 1 PM.
This tour will be given by our own Sally Davidson, a docent at the University Art Museum. We will meet in the Art Museum lobby just before 1 PM. There is an interactive map on the university site to help you find the building.  

There will be a $3 charge per person for this private tour. Public events will follow and you may want to plan to stay for the afternoon.

Matting Workshop
A 3rd workshop will be held on Wednesday October 17th to allow more hands-on cutting and further discussion of different types of Logan mat cutters available. This workshop will have the handouts from the first work shop, so all novices are welcome to attend. We will start from a large 32" x 40" board and foam core. Bring an 8 x 10 or smaller photo which you will have an opportunity to mat and tape and place on a backboard for framing. There will be a nominal fee of $5.00 for materials.
We expect a smaller group, so it will be held at Carl Geisler's home, at One Hunters Run, Princeton, NJ 08540.
Oct. 10th, 2007 Our speaker will be ANNE H. HOY.
Ann is Professor of Fine Arts, New York University. Recent books include: Photography: History, Technique, Art, Future; and Fabrications: Staged, Altered, and Appropriated Photographs (reviewed by the New York Times as, “One of the ten best photography books of the year". She has been Curator of several retrospectives at the International Center for Photography. The topic of her presentation will be IDENTITY IN DISGUISE: SHERMAN AND MAPPLETHORPE.
September 20 Meeting:

 

Sept 20th "Summer Through Your Lens" - As a Princeton Photography Club tradition the September 20th meeting is reserved for a "Show" of our members Photographs. The theme this year is "Summer Through Your Lens". We are looking for photographs that show what summer means to you personally, what epitomizes summer and distinguishes if from the other seasons. Please bring a print of your photograph. Any size, though larger ones show better to the audience. Matting is not required.
August 18th - Summer workshop A second workshop will be held on Saturday 8/18 to allow more hands-on cutting and further discussion of different types of Logan mat cutters available. Our speaker was Anne McCauley, the David H. McAlpin Professor of the History of Photography and Modern Art at Princeton University and the author of numerous articles and books on the history of nineteenth and early twentieth-century photography.

Our speaker was Richard Wright, photographer and digital photography teacher. His digital photographs have won numerous awards and his photographs hang in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and at J&J corp. gallery. His talk’s title is PLASTIC" CAMERA: PHOTOGRAPHER AS SCULPTOR.

Date change: We were supposed to meet on February 14, but decided to postpone for one week because of Valentine's Day.

Review and discussion of members' work. Sally Davidson and Ken Kaplowitz have offered to host another critique - a very successful one! 
The attending members picked photographs for MCA PHOTO SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT POSTCARD. The winners are Igor Svibilsky, Maia Reim and Jeffrey Yuan. This is the postcard layout:

The MCA - Montgomery Center for the Arts at the 1860 house - Photo Show takes place May 11, 2007 through June 24, 2007, with the reception held May 13th.

Robert Mahon talked about PORTRAITS: SOFT PORN TO FINE ART. Mr. Mahon has photographs in the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museum, NYC and the Princeton University Art Museum. He has been a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography.

Our speaker for the December meeting was Phil McAuliffe. Staff photographer with the Princeton Packet newspaper group and freelance for Polaris Images in New York. Have been photographing pro for since 1988. 

November 9, 2005

Our speaker was David Verdini. Many of us met David as a member of the club when he was an avid amateur and early on committed to digital. He made the bold step to turn pro, and has found a niche in food photography. He is a regular contributor to, “New Jersey Tables” among many other media.

October 18, 2005

Our speaker for October meeting was Ken Kaplowitz who presented a very interesting slide show about the history of photography. He is professor of photography at the College of NJ and a fine photographer and ink drawer as well.

Our speaker was  Jay Goodkind,  outstanding b&w landscape and nature photographer. He also treated us to some original prints of Ansel Adams and other famous photographers from his private collection. 

April 13, 2005

Our speaker was Jean Sault Birdsall. She discussed the various Photoshop selection tools and uses for each, keyboard shortcuts and the options panel.

December 8, 2004 Our December speakers were Bob and Jean Birdsall.
They own Birdsall Nature Photography and offer professional photo tours that include digital processing and workflow. Jean is a Photoshop instructor and supplements Bob's professional photography instruction with the how-to of processing your images in the computer.
November 10, 2004 Paul Hart, computer guru,  talked about  digital photography and  computers.  He taught the basics of how a computer is structured and operated, about technologies that can vastly improve our computers performance. We learned about the art of backing up our system, etc.
October 13, 2004 Our guest presenter for this meeting was Patti Murray who spoke and showed slides on Madagascar. She is with an organization called Animals Animals, and leads tours to places all over the world. She showed us many amazing pictures of lemurs, insects and reptiles.

May 12, 2004 Our speaker was Phil Moyland, a nature photographer with a naturalists skills. He is an expert on plants, flowers and birds which he uses to great advantage in finding the shots that make memorable images.  Phil's images have been seen in calendars, magazines and Audubon Society publications. He uses large format and some 35mm as well. He presented a number of his images, both prints and projections, to the club that demonstrate the beauty of our local area.
April 14, 2004 Our meeting's discussion was led by Andy Schmitt who encouraged us into a free-reigning discussion on, "what is photography, what is it coming to in the digital age?" 
March 10, 2004 David Verdini gave us a follow-up on his earlier, excellent introduction to digital photography which stressed camera/scanning basics.
This time it was about fundamental "Photoshop" procedures, which
lead to making a print. 
February 11, 2004 Photo critique session.  It is interesting how may elements be important in addition to the image itself, for example, size, matting, framing.  
January 14, 2004 Our speaker was Cie Stroud, a staff photographer for the (Trenton) Times. She  provided us with examples of her work and told us what it is like to be a newspaper photographer.
December 10, 2003 At this meeting we had the digital symposium. David Verdini showed some projected images from India as well as headed the digital discussion/instruction via computer demonstration.
November 12, 2003 Our speaker for this  meeting was Sherry Rubel, a local portrait photographer. She discussed the artistic and technical aspects of her art form.
October 8, 2003 Our speaker was Larry Popp from Indigo Custom Publishing, where he is Director of Photography. He spoke about sports photography.

May 14, 2003 Indigo Custom Publishing, a national publishing firm headquartered in Macon Georgia, with regional offices in Indiana, New Jersey, Alabama, and Ohio, is proud to announce that Princeton: Pride of the Nation will make its debut in March of 2004.  It will be a tabletop book on Princeton. Larry Popp, Director of Photography of Indigo Publishing  showed us examples of past projects and asked for portfolios to be presented at a later date. 
Our next speaker was Bahman (Ben)
Kalantari, a professor of mathematics at Rutgers.  He amazed us with his new art form, polynomiography.
April 9, 2003 Our speakers were Jay Goodkind and Heinz Gartlgruber, two outstanding landscape and nature photographers. They treated us to an introspective of their photograph journeys and vision.
March 12, 2003 Our speaker was Andy Schmitt. Andy is a very creative fine art photographer and Head of Photography for Peters Valley Photography. He showed and discussed his program this year for Peters Valley Photography and his work using cameras that range from pin hole to 11x14.
February 12, 2003 The speaker at the Club meeting was Ron Eckard from Taylor. He talked about new and wonderful in the world of digital photography.
January 8, 2003 Gallery Talks by club members, discussing the works shown at 1860 House (Montgomery Center for the Arts). 
December 11, 2002 Last session was hosted by Mr. Kenneth Kaplowitz, an Associate Professor of Art at The College of New Jersey. He spoke about his photographic work and  showed slides from a variety of styles in black and white and color including multiple exposures, photo collage, plant studies, abstraction, portraiture, still life and his latest series on tree shadows. 
November 13, 2002 This session was hosted at Princeton Day School by Mrs. Eileen Homuth-Lemonick who has been teaching photography there for more that 20 years. She is a highly respected photographic artist as well as a teacher. She was not shy about making constructive comments and suggestions for us to consider of the work we bring to her for critique. The meeting was very vivid and interesting.
October 9, 2002 A panel discussion on digital imaging was led by Steven Richman, Pat Coleman and David Verdini.  It  included different aspects like capturing the image, scanning, printing, improving the image in Photoshop etc.
September 11th, 2002 The first meeting of the new season 2002-2003.  Many new faces, interesting work presented by old and new members of the Club, discussion of planned events and shows for the new season.
