Princeton Friends of Opera is a group of opera lovers located in the central New Jersey - Bucks County area. We are not affiliated with any opera company or school. Besides supporting various opera companies and programs, both financially and through volunteer support, we offer members the opportunity to hear lectures about operas being performed in the area, tickets to local performances and trips to performances in New York, Philadelphia and other venues.   Special opera events at PFO member homes also provide an opportunity for enthusiasts to gather and share the pleasures of this unique musical/theatrical form.

PFO members have enjoyed trips to see Margaret Garner at Philadelphia Opera, Viaggio a Reims and Semele at New York City Opera and Der Freischutz, an AVA presentation. We sponsored lectures by noted author and lecturer Mary Jane Phillips-Matz, who spoke on the business side of opera in the US, Martha Elliott, author of Singing In Style, and Suzanne Hickman , chair of the Music Department of TCNJ, who spoke on the music of Victor Herbert. These were followed by receptions in the homes of various PFO members.

In the spring , we attended a performance of The Marriage of Figaro by students at Westminster Choir College. This was preceded by a lecture by Westminster faculty member Margaret Cusack. We invited 30 students and their teachers from local high schools to be our guests for the lecture and performance. Most of the students attending had never seen an opera. The day ended with supper at the home of a member.

This past year, we presented two series of three opera videos each at the Princeton Senior Resource Center, which were enthusiastically received by local seniors.

With funds raised at our 2005 holiday party, we have been able to support in 2006:

  • Two students attending Westminster Choir College's CoOPERAtive program
  • One member of Trenton Children's Chorus at Ablemarle music camp
  • A conductor for one of New Jersey Opera Theater's summer opera productions
  • Support for Princeton Festival's opera productions
