Museum: America's
Art
Featured in Scout
Report. Companion Web site to a new book of the
same title from the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM).
Site provides reasonable screen resolution images of all of
the 225 works reproduced in the book. The web site is
organized into 16 chapters, starting with "From Distant
Shores", which contains artwork documenting the
immigrant experience, and ending with "Toward the
Millennium", which is artwork created in the last 20
years of the Twentieth Century. Photographs
From the African Diaspora Featured
in Scout
Report. Web site from the Museum of the African
Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco. A two-story tall
image of an African child, photographed by Chester Higgins
Jr. hangs above the main entrance to MoAD. A mosaic version
of the photograph, composed of 2,000 images contributed by
people from all over the world, is the centerpiece of the
Web site. Clicking anywhere on the child's face retrieves a
30-thumbnail quadrant of the mosaic. Select any of the
individual images in the group to enlarge them, view
identifying captions, and read stories. It is also possible
to search by keyword. Playing
with Shadows: An Introduction to Shadow Puppetry Featured
in Scout
Report. Discover everything you ever wanted to
know about Chinese Shadow Puppetry at this web site from the
Kennedy Center. The site is designed to introduce American
children to this Asian art form, but visitors of all ages
will enjoy learning about how the puppets are made, how the
shadows are cast using the screen and lighting, as well as
typical stories and characters that have reoccurred in
puppet shows for hundreds of years. (These entries copyright
