Hand-carved Plate from Kenya

This is an example how many artists take traditional ideas and transform them into new ideas.  This hand-carved plate from Kenya (East Africa) is etched with traditional images from the Dahomey people and other groups from West Africa.   There has been a sharing of ideas.  The plate--and similar pieces--are carved from a light colored stone.  They are stained with natural dyes- shown here black and rust.  The designs are carved through the stain showing the light colored stone.   This is an example of the kinds of crafts that are made to sell in the markets and for exports.  It was purchased from a local import store.
