Sixth and eighth grade students are studying the art of Pablo Picasso. They saw a video of Picasso's work--"War, Love and Peace"--these are topics Picasso felt strongly about. Sixth graders are reading the local paper to find topics they react strongly to--What makes you scream?  They will create a portrait showing their emotions.  Eighth graders are creating a reduction linoleum print--much as Picasso did.  They are recording events form their middle school years.

Begin your study with any question that interests you. You do not need to go in any certain order. Click on the underlined words in the question or on the URL address to go to the sites. Active links are green (or purple if visited).

LEARN ABOUT PICASSO FROM OUR ARTIST "SPOTLIGHT" PAGE

1.
Where and when was Picasso born? When did Picasso die?  How old was he?  List some key moments in the life of Pablo Picasso.  If you were to curate an exhibit to illustrate these moments in his life, what paintings would you select and why? You may also use Carol Gerten's biography of Picasso (Carol Gerten now has pop up and pop-under ads)

"Picasso Project" http://www.tamu.edu/mocl/picasso/

This Picasso Project site was very comprehensive. Here is another resource just for kids from About.com.
(site has pop-up ads)

2. What events led to Picasso's "discovery" of Cubism? Begin with the year 1909.

http://www.tamu.edu/mocl/picasso/

3.

Read about all of Picasso's different styles or periods of art. Pablo Picasso Minotaur or Man -  ThinkQuest site designed for students. Comprehensive site with lesson plans for various core subjects as well as visual arts. What symbols did Picasso use? Why were they important to him?

Site is no longer online- the Picasso works can be found on other sites.

4. Go to Mark Harden's archive of images.  Which Picasso works would you add to your exhibit and why? What Picasso portrait would you select for the advertisements for your exhibit? Why did you select that particular portrait?

http://www.artchive.com/artchive/P/picasso.html

5. How old was Picasso when he created "Self-Portrait with Uncombed Hair" and "The Altar Boy"?  Compare any two paintings from this site.  What are some different media Picasso used to create art?

Site is no longer online- the Picasso works can be found on other sites.

6. Study some of Picasso's earliest works. Do you think he was gifted at a very young age? How did you come to this decision? Compare the "Old Fisherman" to some of Picasso's later portraits.  Which style of art do you like better? Which is "better" art?  How would you evaluate this web site?  Is it easy to read? What might you suggest to the Webmaster?

http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/picbro.htm

7. Carol Gerten (2 pages)has an extensive art site for you to learn about many different artists.  What do you think of the collections of Picasso images available?  Does she give a good representation?  What additional works might you suggest? Be sure to look at the images on page 2, also. Here is a biography of Pablo Picasso. What resource does Ms. Gerten use? Do you think the information is probably accurate?  How did you come to that conclusion?

8. Go to the Artcyclopedia to find more sites about Pablo Picasso.  Find out more about Cubism. What type of art influenced the development of Cubism? Who were some other Cubist artists? Compare the work of Picasso to George  Braque and Juan Gris.  Why is it difficult to tell the work apart if you are not a scholar of art?

http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/picasso_pablo.htm

9. PBS Picasso and Matisse  Enjoy this "rivalry" between these two great artists. Henri Matisse was Pablo Picasso's senior by twelve years, and the two men could not have been more different. Reserved and dignified, Matisse was the image of respectability. Aggressive and egotistical, Picasso considered himself superior to every person he ever met ..... Except for one .... Henri Matisse.
Click here for a page of quotes from Picasso. I found so many on the Web that I decided he needed his own page!
