Meet Bud Mayes:
I began sculpting when, one day, I was asked by a
Gallery owner if I could sculpt. (He was shopping at an Art supply
store where I was working). I said sure, and it went from there. I had
never sculpted before, so I owe that gentleman my start. I
trained myself to sculpt. God gave me the talent to do it and it
turned out well.
I was introduced to Fritz White, my personal
favorite, who had a foundry in Denver. There I learned to sculpt
originals, how to mold them, and how to cast them in bronze.
Later we had all our work cast by Art Castings of Colorado in Loveland
(before they became pretty famous as a foundry). At that time of my
life I did Western Art. It was all the rage back then.
After I moved to New Mexico it was not long before
I became interested in doing sculpts of American Indians. It was not
long before I gravitated to the spiritual cultures within the tribes.
Most of my last bronzes were depictions of that deeper part of Native
Americans.
Over the years my work has always been in the human
form. I find it intriguing and endlessly fascinating. When I was
introduced to Artdoll making I was at first doubtful. Hey, I'd been
doing a lot of what I now call Macho Stuff. But Artdolls, be they
Dolls, Fantasy Figures, Fairies etc, It is a rewarding area for figure
sculptors.
Art teachers who would like to contact Bud
with questions about his work may email
him.
