Lesson by Judy Decker
LESSON PLAN:  6TH- 8TH  (FREE TIME ACTIVITY)
UNIT: DRAWING AND DESIGN
PROJECT: WHAT IS INSIDE MY LOCKER?

Objectives: students will

·        Use imagination

·        Develop measuring/estimation skills

·        Develop ruler skills

·         Represent self through symbols and images

Materials:

12x18 drawing paper

black permanent markers

watercolor markers

colored pencils

pencil, eraser, ruler

Procedures:

(No instruction necessary—set up supplies and example along with student instruction sheet. Students work on this when finished with main project)

  1. Fold 12x18 paper vertically to make a long folded paper 6”x18”. Put fold on side that your locker opens.
  1. Draw front of locker. You may use the template drawing provided—OR go out in the hallway to draw outside the art room door. You MAY NOT go to your own locker in another hallway.  Remember to draw the vents, locker number and combination lock. Don’t forget the hinges. Draw top and bottom section. construction paper may be used for front cover - I had orange paper for my students to use.
  1. Open fold and draw top and bottom section. Draw items in your locker that will tell a story about who you are. Select objects of importance to you. Option: Create a fantasy “surreal” scene. You may also draw books—coats—book bag (normal locker stuff). Try to be creative and original.
  1. Outline with fine point black marker.
  1. Color with watercolor markers or colored pencils

Evaluation:

This project is graded only on effort, participation and consideration of others. While craftsmanship is expected---you will not be evaluated on your drawing skill level. You are expected to draw on your own without guidance from the teacher. Were you quiet and on task so others cold finish the main assignment?  Were you a “self-starter”? Did you show initiative?
