  INCREDIBLE ART RESOURCES

Lesson plan by: Judy Decker
Unit: Pre-Columbian Art - Inca
Project: Abstract painting - Inspired by Textiles (Interdisciplinary with Social Studies)

Lesson Objectives:

1.        Abstract art: Compare and contrast various forms of artistic expression associated with specific groups of people, geographic regions, or time periods- art of Andean cultures

2.        Investigate processes and beliefs used by various cultures and institutions, past and present, to create works of art.

3.        Discover common subjects, ideas, and themes in art forms from different cultures.

4.        Speculate about a work of art, i.e. who made it; what materials, techniques and skills were used; its intended purpose/audience; and how it was used.

5.        Produce/explore works of art based on their environment

6.        Study a variety of cultures and times to discover how arts forms have been transmitted from one generation to another.

7.        Control a variety of materials, tools techniques and processes while creating works of art.

8.        Recognize how technical elements affect works of art.

9.        Connect ides, materials, processes and techniques while creating works of art.

10.     Create art works using procedures borrowed from other cultures.

11.     Explain why people create art forms.

12.     Discuss and analyze criteria that determine value.

13.     Utilize elements and principles of design to create an abstract composition inspired by nature

14.     Presentation- Design a foil tooled frame to enhance pattern in painting

Materials:

Scanner- digital images from to Weave to the Sun: Andean Textiles

hand-outs of Pre-Columbian designs
graph paper (1/4" to 1/2")
Rulers
Pencils/erasers
Seral transfer paper (or carbon paper)
poster board (cut to 10 x13)
tempera paint, brushes, water dishes, mixing trays
Squeeze fabric paints, paint markers

black permanent  markers

Frames

Corrugated cardboard for frames (opening cut 9 x 12) - outside dimension 12" x15"
Tooling foil - cut into strips
Modeling tools - masking tape

Resources:

Peruvian art prints: National Geographic, Digital photographs from book, Internet images

Internet sites: Andean art, Inca culture (see Art Web page) Additional Pre-Columbian sites

Evaluation:

Web page Evaluation forms
K.W.L. charts-- video worksheets
Student self evaluation forms

Instruction:

1.      (day 1)  View/discuss video: Introduction to pre-Columbian Art (survey) Compare and contrast styles and materials used. Discuss cultures at the time works were created - go over video study guide

2.       (day 2) Discuss/view video: "Inca: Secrets of the Ancestors"- how have we learned from science about these people (new technologies in archeology and analysis of mummy remains, etc.) .show parts of video.

3.       (day 3) Discuss abstraction of natural forms and necessity of abstraction due to weaving process - Demonstrate making geometric animal using graph paper

4.      (day 5 or 6)  Present Web sites- direct student exploration (student hand-out/study guide)

5.       Review new findings from Internet (add to KWL chart) - continue working on drawings

6.       Demonstrate painting technique - review color planning -- analogous colors and complementary colors

7.       Demonstrate making of frame - folding foil around card board and tooling frame

Procedures:

1.       View/discuss videos.  Fill out K.W.L chart - complete chart after Internet lesson (what new information was gained?)

2.       Create an abstract composition inspired by nature. See birds, fish, cats etc. of Andean textiles.  Use graph paper to aid in geometric design.  Add designs to negative space (see textile border designs)

3.       Transfer to poster board for painting

4.       Select color plan- Paint composition with tempera paints- limit colors

5.     Accent finished painting with paint markers and squeeze paint to enhance patterns and create a textural effect similar to fabric.

6.      Make foil frame -Strips were wide enough wrap about 1/2" around the outside and inside of cardboard frame. Excess was cut off at outside corners (long side strips cut at 45° angle at corners). Score foil where needed to fold. Wrap foil strips around corrugated cardboard frame - tape to back side with masking tape. Tool with designs to complement painting  Tooled designs were inspired by gold and metal work from Peruvian cultures and other Pre-Columbian cultures. (Note: I cut the strips ahead of time on paper cutter and had card board templates for students to use for cutting angles and for cutting to fit on inside of frame).

8.       Critique- evaluate work.
