Unit: Art of Japan- Collage
Project: Japanese collage
Grade Level: Seventh

Lesson Objectives:

1.        Compare and contrast various forms of artistic expression associated with specific groups of people, geographic regions, or time periods.

2.        Investigate processes and beliefs used by various cultures and institutions, past and present, to create works of art.

3.        Discover common subjects, ideas, and themes in art forms from different cultures.

4.       Identify the cultural clues found within arts forms Discover how a group's beliefs and values are reflected in its art

5.        Produce/explore works of art based on their environment - drawing from life

6.        Combine the elements of two or more arts forms to communicate ideas or information.

7.        Control a variety of materials, tools techniques and processes while creating works of art. Create a multi-media collage work expressing ideals of beauty. Combine drawing with collage. Utilize elements and principles of design. Exhibit craftsmanship

8.      Integrate technology - use scanned textile images to create a border design.

Materials:

Handouts of Oriental art  
Corrugated cardboard  
Gold and Assorted fadeless papers 
White drawing paper

ModPodge glue
Brushes, scissors
Texture panels
Metallic and gem crayons
India ink
Assorted magazines, decorative papers, oriental papers
Images from Internet
Watercolors, colored pencils
Live plants
Fine point permanent markers
Scanner - printer- PhotoDeluxe Software.

Motivation/Instruction:

1.       View/discuss video: Oriental Art.  View/discuss slides: The Floating World.  Discuss beliefs, concepts of beauty, 
      style characteristics of Japanese woodcuts and paintings.
2.       Demonstrate drawing plant from nature
3.       Demonstrate collage techniques
4.       Demonstrate crayon rubbing technique (place texture panels under paper) to add textural interest to work
5.       Present variety of decorative papers, magazines and resources for images for collage.  

Artist for Inspiration:

Kumiko McKee - born in Japan, now living in US. Beautiful oil paintings on masonite - using classical techniques to create realistic images that are partly abstract - rich in color and pattern.  Be sure to see the Koto which are paintings based on Japanese culture.

Procedures:

1.       View/discuss video and slides. Answer questions on worksheets.

2.       Draw plants from life to add to collage

3.       Draw a Japanese person to add to collage (use a selection of handouts for ideas)

4.       Create background- use choice of solid color papers or wallpaper for background (gold suggested).  Create landscape or interior scene reflecting characteristics of Japanese art. Texture papers with metallic crayons for interest.  Crinkle and dip into watered down black ink for batik effect (antique appearance) if desired. Glue background to corrugated cardboard with Mod-Podge. 

5.       Out line person and plant with fine point marker

6.       Add color to plant with colored pencils and/or watercolors (Some students chose to have their plants photocopied onto green fadeless paper). 

7.       Collage costume of person with a variety of papers - Unity is important.

8.       Cut out plants and person - add to collage background.  Add additional images from magazines, the Internet, personal drawings, etc.

9.       Add Japanese print border from scanned images of textile design. Select border and change colors using PhotoDeluxe software

10.   Critique and Evaluate work.
