- Showing Emotions - What you read in the newspaper
Grade Level: 6th Grade (suitable for grade 4 thru 7) examples are special education students
Have some fun! Students could learn Greg Percy's song "Picasso Polka" - do a little dance!

Objectives:

Art appreciation, art history- Pablo Picasso: Cubism
Critique works of art
Understanding design vocabulary
Explore the collage techniques- use a variety of materials Develop skill in cutting, gluing, use of line
Recycling- "Art from the Global Scrap Heap" - use a variety of recycled materials
For frame: Integrate technology (digital headlines)

Materials:

Mirrors - 12x 18 newsprint - Construction paper, scrap paper; newspapers, wallpaper – and other papers. Pencils, scissors, 
Seral transfer paper, glue, 
black permanent markers, 
paint markers 
Poster board for frame

Motivation:

  1. Video: Picasso Love, War and Peace Show selections

  2. Art prints of work by Picasso - Discuss Cubist style portraits (numerous prints)

  3. Internet Lesson on Pablo Picasso - students explore the art and life of Picasso.             Know the Artist: Pablo Picasso

  4. Examples of collage portraits (teacher made and student made)

  5. Demonstrations of making collage portrait - showing multiple views - using assorted materials

  6. Demonstrations of various drawing techniques using marker- adding line for pattern, value, texture, decorative uses

  7. Demonstration of collage technique for newspaper covered frame - demonstration of digital headlines using Word software.

Procedures:

1.            View video on Picasso- fill out work sheet- discuss

2.            Critique work of Picasso- select one image to write about- include elements and principles of design vocabulary (chapter 2 in text). Learn more about Picasso via the Internet (Picasso Internet Lesson and Know the Artist: Pablo Picasso)

3.            Make realistic self-portrait drawing paying attention to details and proportion - use mirrors (use 12 x 18 newsprint - or white drawing paper)

4.            Select one work of Picasso as inspiration for own self-portrait.  Draw cubist style portrait on 12x18 Newsprint paper - show multiple views.  Compare realistic and cubist style drawing.

5.            Transfer cubist style drawing to 12x18 construction paper to use as base -use Seral transfer paper.

6.            Continue composition (transfer sections of portrait to construction paper, cut and glue) using a variety of materials: fabric, wallpaper, texture  papers, wrapping paper, construction paper, etc. May use newsprint drawing as a pattern shape for cutting. For this lesson, we added holding a newspaper ("Newspapers in Education") and showed what our emotions were while reading.

7.            Outline cut shapes with black permanent marker for contrast.

8.             Add line: for value, pattern, simulated textures, decorative uses. Use paint markers for accents and puffy paints if desired.

9.            Make frame - collage newspaper articles around the outside edge of poster board (about 2 1/2" in all around). Use Word to make some additional head lines. Print digital headlines - cut out and collage over newspaper frame. Teacher use mat knife to cut opening. (Students who were behind matted theirs with plain white or black mats.)

10.       Critique work - Answer short answer essays and fill out student evaluation.
