Activities

1.      Use Internet lesson  Sports Art

2.      Present teacher made PowerPoint -- Jacob Lawrence - particular emphasis on people at wrok - movement (Builders series)

3.      Select sports figure from magazine or Internet

4.      Draw a practice figure using the head as unit a measure – figure eight head heights tall on 9x12 newsprint (marked off by folding)

5.      Draw contour figure on 9 x 12 newsprint – figure will be enlarged using photocopy machine (I did not stress realism - wanted student to draw their way - Bearden and Lawrence were selected deliberately - I also showed students some William Johnson figures. See note below)

6.      Plan composition using original drawing an photocopy enlargements – show feeling of movement – larger figures toward foreground – smaller in background (higher up  on page)

7.      Transfer drawing to 12 x 18” watercolor paper using Seral transfer paper.

8.      Outline with permanent marker

9.      Color with water color pencils – use a variety of colors – more than one color in a shape

10.  Add color to negative space using long diagonal strokes

11.  Brush over with water – add watercolors to negative space if desired.

Note: Since the goal was for students do have a work of art they enjoyed -- After the drawing stages of their sports figure on 9 x 12 newsprint - if the student honestly was not happy with their drawing -I allowed them to trace the contours of the sports figure they found on the Internet or magazine. I had them use ONE image of their own drawing and the rest could be copies and/or enlargements of the traced figure. Some "problem students" - who felt they were not "good at art" opted to do this and were so happy about their work they begged to come in academic assist to work on them. This is one unit that ALL students enjoyed.
