UNIT: Art History Research
Lesson: Flip flops...."In the style of....."
Grade Level: middle school
Materials:
Flip Flops, permanent markers (optional), acrylic paints, brushes
GOALS:
Become familiar with the work of a specific artist
Learn about the life of a specific artist
Demonstrate an understanding of parody, homage and
pastiche through visual and verbal means
You
will be painting a pair of flip flops.
The images will relate to the artist you research in one or
more of the following ways (Taken from Art in the Style of…
by Stephanie Corder):
Parody or Satire: A work that imitates the
characteristic style of another work, either for comic effect or
ridicule. Parody is a
basic metaphor or comparison.
Also known as appropriation, content, caricature, homage
and satire
Homage:
Special acknowledgment or respect shown or expressed
publicly to a person whose influence an artist wishes to honor.
You can show this by duplicating a famous work in its
entirety or by using key elements of an artist’s style in
recognition of them
Pastiche:
A work of art made by imitating and combining several
styles of other artists’ works. Often a pastiche is made in order to ridicule the style of
the artist it imitates.
STEPS:
- Draw
a name from the jar (list given at the end of submission)
- Research
the work of your artist to determine what color flip flop
would be the best “canvas” color for your paintings.
Ask yourself what color is predominant in most of the
work by your artist.
- Look
over the definitions above and determine which style you will
use in your painting. You
may use different styles for each flip flop or use the same
one.
- You
will be writing a report on your artist.
Be certain to include the following:
- Date
and place of birth
- What
other artists did your artist know and/or was influenced by?
- What
movement or style was your artist associated with?
- Be
sure you can explain what the movement/style is
- Interesting
facts
- Date
and place of death
- What
style(s) you chose to paint your flip flops?
- Explain
what the definition of that style is
- How
you attempted to create your painting using that style?
- Turn
your flip flops and research paper in together.
Note: Judi bought the flip flops on sale for
about $2.50. She had a small class for this.
