Emphasis: Hands on the brick surface suggest a sense of being trapped or imprisoned. Stark contrast of complementary colors add to the effect.

Effect: Chalk / Charcoal (Filter/Artistic), Invert, Glowing Edges (Filter/Stylize), Texture (Filter/Texturizer), Curves (Image/Adjust)
Photo Description:
Shot: Wide Angle: Low / Dutch Angle Discussion of Elements: Color Shape Pattern Line
Emphasis: Sense of rapid movement created by angle, direction and distortion of shot, accentuated by vividness of the contrast in the selected color scheme

Effect: Replace Color (Image/Adjust), crop
Photo Description:
Shot: Medium
Angle: Low Discussion of Elements: Color Shape Texture
Emphasis:
The exaggerated manipulation of color in the image creates a magical sense of place in the photograph.  The angle of the shot also adds a sense of expectancy to the composition.

Effect: Replace Color (Image Adjust)
Photo Description:
Shot:
Angle: Medium
High Discussion of Elements: Color Shape Texture Pattern
Emphasis:
The repetitive occurrence of cylindrical shapes creates a circular movement in the composition. The pattern of the wooden  slats that make up the tops of the cylinders and also makeup the platform, help to give greater direction to that movement.

Effect: Solarize (Filter/Stylize)

See work by William Van Horn artist/art teacher - Prairie Grove Middle School, Arkansas

From William: I usually use digital photos that I manipulate in Photoshop 7. Or, as in the case of Unknown Ancestor (left), scanned images from old family B&W photos. I use many layers so the image may be changed directly and I may add other masking or translucent layers over the image. As in Bird on a Wire (right), I do a lot of work with a stylus, using the smearing tool, burn, dodge and sponge tools, etc.
