Sports Logo Design

Symbols with Letters and Images

Create a logo design for a women soccer tournament, The Kickoff Classic, and present their design to class.

OBJECTIVES:

The student will become aware of graphic design and design principles, appreciate clarity and communication in lettering, layout, and ideogram, and content in logo design.

Use design principles to develop logo design, apply lettering, layout, ideogram, and symbols to logo.

Examine how symbols, typography and layout influence logo composition, self-evaluate and critique finished logo presentations, and "sell" completed design to the class which acts as the selection committee.

Materials:

  • Cartridge
  • newsprint
  • tracing paper
  • 2 ply bristol board
  • Pencils #2 & HB
  • magic markers
  • colouring pencils

Introduction:

  1. Present students with LOGO DESIGN CONTEST handout as well as explaining the assignment verbally.
  2. Emphasize the importance of meeting the Selection Criteria
  3. Give three classes to work on assignment and one day for presentation.
  4. Students will "sell" completed design to class which acts as selection committee.
  5. Students evaluate each presentation, basing their evaluations on the selection criteria.
  6. During presentations, teacher will evaluate.

PRESENTATION:

What is a symbol?

Logo ideas in symbolism.

What is a logo?
- logos marks consisting of pronounceable words,
- related to familiar visual and phonic codes- identity devices,
- logos are one word- shorter the better
-relationship of logo sound with the letter forms
- should be researched for effectiveness, understanding and context correctness

Traits of good symbols:
- positive a ssociation
- easy identification
-reduction symbols
- few colours
- positive and negative space association
-flow, direction, metering

Techniques: Preliminary sketches
- Thinking with your pencil
- small idea sketches drawn quickly, in great quantity
Refined Sketches - larger sketches which represent best ideas, sharpened edges, crisp details drawn to size
Presentation Design - precisely drawn in required presentation size

ACTIVITY:

Research, study examples shown , initial small sketches

Use tracing paper as narrow down image and time saver for exploring many ideas

Use #2 h pencil to rough out design, fine tip felt markers and coloured pencils to explore colour designs

Save sketches in design folder for research on future symbols

Use 2 ply bristol board for final presentation
