Forget about painting things the way they look- how about
how they feel? After viewing works by Gauguin and Van Gogh, students
see that other colors may inhabit the world. The sky can become broad
strokes of orange, red, purple, and green. A face can become streaks of
blue, orange, red, and brown. An artist can create a Twilight Zone. When
artists paint colors that make you feel, then that becomes Expressionism.
Red typically signifies anger. Blue can mean depression. Black can be
death. White can be purity....etc. (For further symbolisms of color, visit IAD's page on color)
Students then will paint a 12 X 18 (30.5 x 46 cm) tempera painting using
Expressionists' colors and brush styles.
Note: Also show students work done by the Expressionists.
