Multi-Color Leaf Prints

MonaLesson Plan Submitted by Judith Walsh
Elementary Art Teacher at Mt. Zion Elementary in Suffolk, VA
Grades: Pre K - 5

leaf prints

Materials:

  • 9" X 12" white paper
  • markers
  • scissors
  • Styrofoam dinner plates (or meat trays)
  • pencils
  • Handi-Wipes and leaf pattern (optional)

Procedure:

Students may trace around leaf pattern on a styrofoam plate with a dull pencil or they may draw their own leaf. Students should add veins to their leaves- pressing firmly into Styrofoam with a dull pencil. After tracing or sketching their leaves, should cut the leaves out.. Next, students will color with markers all over their leaf and quickly print it on their paper. Then, students will wipe off that color with Handi- Wipes and apply another color.

They will quickly print this color on top of the first leaf print making sure they are aligned correctly. They can continue this procedure with 2 more colors, making sure they wipe off each color after it has been printed.

The results are really pretty and the kids love the tie-dye effect on the Handi-Wipes!

If you aren't able to acquire leaves or want to do this as a craft project at home, you can also create the art using McCall's Creates: Leaf Pattern Printing
