Percy's song "Mondrian" - Songs in the Key of Art Vol. II
Objectives:

SWL( students will learn) the primary colors.
·

mixing primary colors for secondary.
·
SWL
how to create basic geometric shapes from lines.
·
Students
will experience a mixed media project.
·
Students
will follow the style and technique of a famous painter (Piet Mondrian).
Prep: Pre-cut strips of black construction paper into 1 inch strips the long
way.
Procedures:
Step
One:
·
Introduce
line and color through Mondrian’s “Composition in Red, Yellow &
Blue” or “Broadway Boogie Woogie." Compare to other Mondrian
artworks if available.
·
Discuss
different lines; horizontal, vertical.
·
Discuss
shapes created by the lines.
·
Discuss
primary colors; red, yellow, and blue.
·
Explain
or demonstrate how to arrange strips on paper to create lines and shapes.
·
Hand
out white paper, name on the back.
·
Students
use 5 strips of paper to create Mondrian like artwork. Can cut off ends
that run off side of paper to use for smaller areas inside the artwork.
·
Put
on drying rack when complete.
Step
two:
·
Mondrian
review: focus on primary colors and arrangement.
·
Review
color chart and how to plan for a secondary color.
·
Demo
choosing two primary colors and painting carefully within areas selected.
·
Demo
how to mix the two selected primaries into a secondary.
·
Students
work to complete assignment.
·
Put
on drying rack.
Step
Three:
·
Hang
artworks on chalkboard or other area and discuss what we like about
different student works and their choices. Similarities and differences to
Mondrian. Positive statements and critique encouraged.
