Achievement First Bridgeport Academy
New Haven, CT 06613
Email: aliciagarcia@achievementfirst.org
Start: 2010-2011
Location: New Haven, Bridgeport, Hartford, CT
Achievement First is a charter school management organization started in July 2003 by the leaders of Amistad Academy, a high performing charter school in New Haven, CT. A non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization, Achievement First is creating a network of achievement-gap closing charter schools in Connecticut and New York to bring to scale the dramatic, life changing student achievement results produced at Amistad Academy.
Teaching at Achievement First:
We believe that every child has the ability to succeed and attend college. Our students work extremely hard and are held to very high expectations regarding both their academic achievement and character development. Students are expected to operate in accordance with our REACH Values (Respect, Enthusiasm, Achievement, Citizenship, and Hard Work) both in and outside of school. Achieving these high standards primarily depends on placing great teachers in the classroom, thus we invest a great deal into our educators. Each teacher attends two weeks of New Staff Training and two bi-annual professional development days where the entire network convenes with other leaders in the educational field. Each teacher is paired with a one-on-one coach and the school week is structured so that teachers devote half of every Friday to professional development with their grade-level and/or subject teams. Teachers also have the opportunity to pursue multiple leadership options while still in the classroom. We invest in each of our teachers with the understanding that they alone have the power to achieve our mission of providing all students with the academic and character skills necessary to succeed in a competitive world.

Indianapolis Art Center Seeks Arts Educators for Summer Program
The Indianapolis Art Center's outreach department is looking for 3 licensed arts educators to work within a new summer public art program for children that was piloted last summer. The new program, American Scene, is designed to introduce youth from underserved areas of Indianapolis between the ages of 8-12 to public works of art created under the 1930's WPA- Works Progress Administration and Public Works of Art Project. Specifically, students will learn about both Indianapolis based and national American Scene artists whose works of art reflected the hardships faced by people across the country as a result of the Great Depression. The artwork that is created during this project will mirror one part of the American Scene movement, we will ask youth to reflect upon their community and surroundings. A maximum of 25 students will work with an artist and arts educator at a community partner location to create a small to mid-size piece of public art that incorporates the students' view of their community and then later be installed at the community partner location.
Arts educators will be paired with a local artist and matched to a community program site. Arts educators will be responsible for researching and developing lesson plans with the artist that bring the artist's concept for a mural or sculptural piece to life. They will also be responsible for teaching these lesson plans to the youth. The goal of this approach is that the students will learn about this particular time in American art history as well as techniques associated with the creation of public art.
The Art Center is looking for arts educators to assist local artists in a team teaching format this summer. Specifically we are looking for arts educators with experience teaching children from underserved areas of Indianapolis. Those with this experience are encouraged to submit the following by March 8, 2010.
* Resume and 3 professional references
* 3 examples of written lesson plans
* 3 examples of student work preferably those that are tied to the 3 written lesson plans
Mail to:
Laura Alvarado
Director of Outreach
820 E. 67th St.
Indianapolis, IN 46220
Once chosen, each artist and art educator will be expected to plan and team teach students about artists or artwork produced under the WPA and American Scene movement and lead youth through the process of creating a small to mid-size piece of artwork for display.
* Total direct contact/working hours with children in the summer = 20 hours
* Total preparation and installation hours = 15 hours
Total paid for the 35 hours of work= $875.00
Please note that the material expense will be covered by the Art Center's outreach dept.

Indianapolis Art Center Seeks Artists for Summer Program
The Indianapolis Art Center's outreach department is looking for 3 artists to work within a new summer public art program for children that was piloted last summer. The artwork that is created during this project will mirror one part of the American Scene movement, youth will be asked to reflect upon their community and surroundings. A maximum of 25 students will work with each artist at a community partner location to create a small to mid-size piece of public art that incorporates the students' view of their community and then later be installed at the community partner location.
The Art Center is looking for artists with a background in creating murals or sculptural pieces and who have had some kind of experience working with children. Those with this experience are encouraged to submit the following by March 8, 2010.
* Resume and 3 professional references
* One written concept proposal (no longer than one page,) that expresses an overall image or concept the students will work within and indicates how the students message and artwork will be implemented using a particular media. If providing a 2-d concept please note that most sites will only be able to accommodate a 10' tall x 20' length or smaller space.
* A cd with 5 images of your artwork
Mail to:
