Kara had her 7th grade students
each make a set of 4 ceramic drink coasters. She encouraged them to pick
interesting shapes instead of the standard square or circular shapes.
There were some fish, butterflies, cats, planets, geometric shapes, fruits, cows,
pigs, leaves, flowers, shapes to go along with different holidays and so
on. They could make all 4 look the same of they can make different ones,
as long as they could exist together in a set. For example, one
students made two coasters in the shape of lily pads, while the other
two were frogs.
To finish them, students decoupaged on top of the coasters, so they
were very bright and eye catching. Mostly the kids collaged with tissue
paper, but they also used handmade paper scraps, and the kids were also free
to decoupage photos or pictures from magazines or the internet on top.

Creative Draped Slab Bowls
"When a bowl isn't just a
bowl"....Seventh graders made these
creative sculptural draped slab bowls. Bowls were made by draping
clay over bowl (using a plastic wrap separator). Plaster cast bowl
shaped humps could be used. The concept was that each student should
take a standard bowl and make it into something more interesting. Sculptural elements were added.
The bowls took about 1-2 weeks to build and about the same amount of
time to paint. Students
painted bowls with tempera then gave them a gloss acrylic finish.

Sixth Grade
Perspective Studies
Sixth graders learned how to draw
shapes in one point perspective They worked on 8"x8"
pieces of paper and drew a variety of shapes in 1 point perspective.
Kara placed strong emphasis on the students adding creative and
unique elements to the drawings so that they were not simply 3-D
shapes. They used colored pencil for this project.
