Patriotic Art - Art about Peace

PATRIOTIC ART - ART ABOUT PEACE
Submitted by: Jeannie Sandoval's Patriot Wall - Freedom Quilt
West Hall Middle School, Oakwood Georgia

16' x 12' "Freedom Quilt" Getty TeacherArtExchange
Members gave a "helping hand" in this 16' x 12' Freedom Quilt -- and all West Hall Middle School teachers get their hands in, too.

From Jeannie: I shared this with my SPED
teachers and we came up with a quilt (love that idea!). We used the symbols of freedom and decided to make a quilt with 4" squares and have the kids make a quilt square "what freedom means to me" and name the quilt... Let Freedom Ring! The background squares are red, white and blue for  the 6th and 7th graders. On the inside (for the "appliqué") we made a Liberty Bell using tans, browns and gray construction paper. The 8th graders are the bell and the fringe around the  quilt - the teachers fingers that were traced and  cut out.  See Detail.

Shown left is Jeannie's Patriot Pride door.... See

From Denise Pannell: Patriot Tags on Trees

Last year, to honor Patriot Day (9/11), I had students create a tag to be hung on our trees outside the art room. They drew a picture on one side and wrote a message on the back. We punched a hole in the end, tied on colorful thread,  and hung them to the trees for the day. Some blew off and they were rained on, but it still made an impact on the students.

From Heather Leal - Group Quilts and Wall of Words

Each advisement class (like home room) made one square. I put together packets of fabric for each class so there would be consistency of color throughout. Then a couple of parents helped me sew the squares together. They are just tied through the layers, not actually quilted. We left them hanging in the school until last spring- it was painting time. Shown right is a  picture of the word wall they did on 9/12 the first year too- it was Woody Duncan's idea. It was a good positive thing to do. Last year we made peace tags and hung them on cut tree branches around the school. Click to see larger image of Word Wall. Create your own kind of Memorial Wall.
