Lesson Plan: Glue Pastels Fish -
creatures of the water
Grade Level: Elementary (Julienne did this with second grade)
Art History/
Multicultural Focus/ Interdisciplinary: Literature – Fishes

Number of class sessions (60
minutes in length): 2
Rationale: To have
the children create a fish of their own. This will require
creativity but will also force the children to work within a basic
outline.
National Standard:
Visual Arts: K-4, Content Standard 1: Understanding and applying
media, techniques, and processes.
Michigan Content
Standards: 1. Performance – Visual Arts – Elementary. Use
art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.
Proficiency level of
achievement/ benchmarks: Students know the difference between
materials, techniques, and processes.
Objectives: Students
will develop new skills, knowledge, comprehension of elements of
design (color, shape, and line), and a principle of design
(variety).
Expected Outcomes:
1. The student will learn
about chalk pastels.
2. The student will learn
about sea animals.
3. The student will learn
how glue can be used for something other then connecting two pieces
of paper..
4. The student will learn
how to follow a step-by-step process.
5. The student will learn
how make a fish.
Materials: black
construction paper, black crayons, galactic glue, chalk pastels,
hairspray, newspaper
Visual/ Exemplars: Fishes
book and a sample of each step of the process.
Vocabulary Words: Pastels:
1: a paste
made of powdered pigment ranging from pale to deep colors and used
for making crayons; also: a crayon made of such paste
2 a : a drawing in pastel b : the
process or art of drawing with pastels
Teacher Preparation
(What will you do to get ready?): get materials, examples and book
together.
Motivation/
Demonstration: Read book: Fishes, talk about fish (types,
colors, etc.), talk about what else is in the fish’s environment,
show a completed fish & get them excited to make their own.
Project/ Classroom
Procedure: (detailed process and management plan):
Talk about fish/read book
Show a completed fish
Show the step one fish
Have them draw their own
fish with the black crayon on the black construction paper
Have them trace their fish
with glue
Set fish aside for a day to
dry
Color in fish and
scenery/background with chalk
Spray with hairspray to fix
picture
Safety Considerations:
Don’t let the children blow the chalk dust at one another.
Adaptations for students
with special needs: help with glue and coloring and whatever else is
needed.
Assessment Process
(methods and detailed criteria list): Did they follow the directions
and come out with a good, uniquely decorated and fully colored fish?
If so, they get a good grade to reflect that. See
