I See the Moon

Background
:
Earth is one of the nine planets that travel around the sun.   We live on the planet Earth.   The moon circles the Earth once a month.   When we look up at the sky on a clear night, we see the moon in one of its several stages.  We may also see stars, moons, other planets and comets.

Objective :   Young student and family shall enjoy an activity in which they view the night sky together and identify objects in the sky.  The moon and its phases will be center of this activity.

Product
:  Young student will have opportunity to draw or paint the night sky, including moon in whatever phase it is in at time of viewing.   Ask him to dictate a story to you about the drawing. Print it on the back of his paper.

Materials Needed:  A sheet or blanket to lie on; Paper, crayons, pencils or paints.

Process
:
On a clear night, young student and family members lie on the ground on a sheet or blanket and look up at sky, searching and describing what they see.   Talk about the moon and its phases. Is it a full moon, a half moon, or a quarter moon?   (Hint:   per US Naval Observatory, Full moon arrives on August 30.)

Vocabulary words
:  sun, moon, stars, full moon, half moon, quarter moon, sky.

Skills/Learning Styles/Intelligences
: Naturalist, Visual, Spatial, Emerging Literacy, Linguistic, Social Development, Mathematical, Science, Fine Motor Control.

Extended Learning
:  Visit library for books about the moon and the night sky.  Make regular visits to observe the night sky as it changes, and discuss.  Ask young student to compare the day sky (from earlier funwork) with the night sky.  What is the difference?   Why?

Congratulations to all the Families Who Choose to be Involved in your Young Student's Education.

Enjoy your time together!
