Sky View

Background
:
Weather is changeable.   It can be sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy. The rain and wind can be calm or strong (heavy).   The sky can tell us a lot about weather.   In the daytime we can usually see the sun and maybe some clouds.  After the rain, we may even see a rainbow.  At night we may be able to see the moon and stars.

Objective:  Young student and family will view and discuss the sky.   Young student will be encouraged to reproduce the sky they see in a drawing or painting.

Product
:  A drawing or painting of the sky.

Materials Needed:  Blanket or large towel, Paper, choice of crayons, markers, paint and brushes, sunglasses.

Process
:
Young student and family member will lie on back on spread blanket or towel on grass in park or yard.   Warning:  Although both may wear sunglasses, neither should look directly at sun.  Look at the sky and talk about what you see.  Pay attention to the cloud shapes.  Do they remind you of anything?   What color is the sky?  The clouds?  Do the clouds move?  Why?

Vocabulary words
:  weather, sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy, sun, moon.

Skills/Learning Styles/Intelligences
: Verbal/Linguistic; Naturalistic; Body/Kinesthetic/Interpersonal (Social), Visual/Spatial; Fine Motor.

Extended Learning
:  Repeat the procedure when it is dark.  Discuss differences.
