Shapes & Sizes

Background :    Mathematics exists in many parts of our lives.  This activity engages thinking math (problem solving) and content math (geometry, patterns and relationships).

Objective:   Young students will have opportunity to learn the names of different shapes they see every day. Young students will have opportunity to experience shape-making. Young students will have opportunity to sort their products by size or color or shape.

Product:  A variety of shapes in different colors and sizes

Materials Needed: Paper, crayons.

Process:   While walking or traveling, point out traffic signs and talk about their shape.  Count how many sides the “Yield” sign has (3),  how many sides the traffic sign has (4) , how many sides the stop sign has (8). Later, encourage young student to draw a triangle, a rectangle and a stop sign. If necessary, lend help, preferably with a stencil for him to draw around.

Vocabulary words:  Traffic signs, triangle, rectangle, octagon

Skills/Learning Styles/Intelligences:  Logical/Mathematical, Social Skills (traffic rules), Kinesthetic.

Extended Learning:   Make several sets of these signs and encourage young student to sort them by type. Discuss traffic rules and safety; why it is important to follow them.

Formas y Tamaños

Historía:  Matemáticas existe de muchas formas en nuestras vidas.  Esta actividad atraerá el pensamiento matemático (Solución de problemas) y contenido en matemáticas (Geometria, Modelos y Relaciones).

Objetivo:    Los niños tendrán la oportunidad de aprender los nombres de diferentes figuras cada dia. Los niños tendrán la oportunidad de experimentar el realizar estas formas. Tambien tendran la oportunidad de clasificar sus propias figuras por color o forma.

Producto:  Una variedad de formas en diferentes colores y tamaños.

Materiales que necesita:  Papel, Crayones.

Proceso:   Mientras caminamos o viajamos, podemos señalar las señales de transito y hablar acerca de las  formas que tienen. Contar cuantos lados tienen ( Ejemplo: la señal “Yield” tiene tres(3) lados), cuales tienen cuatro (4), cuantas tiene la señal del Stop (8). Despues, ayudar al niño a dibujar un triangulo, un rectangulo y una señal se Stop ó pare con 8 lados. Si es necesario, ayudelo con las plantillas, estas son de mucha ayuda para los trazos.

Vocabulario:  Señales de tránsito, triangulo, rectangulo, octagono.

Destrezas/estilos de aprendizaje/inteligencias:  Espacial/Matemática, Destrezas socials (reglas de trafico), Movimiento corporal.

Enseñanza y oportunidades:    Realizar varios sets de estas señales y ayude a su niño a clasificarlos por tipo. Hablar acerca de las reglas del trafico y seguridad y por que es tan importante seguirlas y cumplirlas.
