Hearts
Background:
Ability to discern between shapes is a
pre-reading skill. The heart is one of the first most
young children easily distinquish. The shape is
associated with “love” of others. On Valentine’s
Day, celebrated in the U. S. on February 14, hearts are
frequently used to make greetings and exchanged. |
Objective
: Young student will be able to sort heart
shapes by size |
Materials
Needed: Paper of choice, scissors (child safe,
blunt), Container such as a sandwich bag. |

Process:
Adult family member shows young student how to
fold a piece of paper in half to cut out a heart.
Working together cut out about ten shapes, all different
sizes.

Skills/Learning Styles/Intelligences: Fine motor skills, mathematical/logical,
literacy, language development, socialization. |
|
Extended Learning:
Mix up the hearts and spread them out on the
table or floor. Talk about the different sizes.
Young student is encouraged to put in order from small to
large, count the hearts, put them in order from large to
small.
