Guide for Scientists
- by Peter S. Fiske Ph.D., Washington, DC: American Geophysical Union, 2001
This book is the revised edition of the 1996 volume To Boldly Go; A Practical Career Guide for Scientists.
The earlier edition included some personal accounts from scientists in a variety of jobs.
There is updated information about some of them in this edition. There are chapters on
learning about job opportunities, career planning and career change, exploring research
careers, going after specific opportunities, self-assessment, writing c.v.'s and resumes
(including 6 case studies), writing cover letters, and interviewing. There is discussion
throughout of taking charge of one's job search and of presenting the skills and abilities
scientists have to non-traditional employers. The book is illustrated with hilarious
cartoons by Aaron Louie.
