Cambridge School Students to Showcase Original Opera

BRAVO Target!!!   Bringing Opera to South Brunswick year long programming begins on Monday, November 2 when three young OPERA Ambassadors, Lisa Lo, Olivia Scattergood and Meghna Mahajan introduce their original opera to the5th grade students to Cambridge elementary School.  The girls, who were awarded scholarships by the Aging in Place PARTNERSHIP, were introduced to opera at the Opera New Jersey Summer Opera camp. As part of their responsibilities each “Ambassador” has committed to providing community service to the South Brunswick Senior Center and developing ways to encourage their fellow students to become interested in Opera.

On November 18, Young Audiences New Jersey's Opera WORKS interactive assembly will follow the November 2nd event and introduce opera to an expanded group of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and interested senior citizens. A quote from Young Audiences states, "If you doubt that a program about opera could be one of our most popular offerings, you haven't seen "Opera Works." We guarantee that students will never think opera is "stuffy" (nor will any misguided adults in the audience) once Steve & Co. presents its light-hearted mix of great singing, slapstick, and audience participation. With excerpts from "The Barber of Seville," "Porgy and Bess," "La Traviata," and "Don Giovanni"-- not to mention some conducting and musical help from the audience -- the assembly offers a wonderful opportunity to develop a lasting appreciation of opera."  Both programs will take place at Kendall Park’s Cambridge Elementary School.

As an added bonus, invited 5th graders from the school’s chorus and selected seniors will be introduced to the critiquing process in a workshop that will encourage them to not only critique the November 18th  introduction but to use these skills as they participate in the rest of  BRAVO Target!!!! programs throughout the school year.

Upcoming dates include January 16th’s  Live at the Met HD performance of Bizet’s CARMEN, the dress rehearsal of Opera New Jersey‘s February production of CARMEN, the Cambridge School’s spring concert including excerpts from age appropriate operas and Opera New Jersey’s Spring afternoon of Opera and Musical Theatre at the Senior Center.  BRAVO Target!!! created by the Aging in Place PARTNERSHIP in cooperation with the South Brunswick Senior Center is funded in part by Target and the Cambridge Elementary School PTO. Seating is limited. To register contact 732 305 – 7079 or check
