Hopewell Elementary School Locks of Love Event 2014

06/24/2014

On Monday June 16, 2014, 40 parents, faculty members, and students participated in Hopewell Elementary's annual Locks of Love event.  The event collected 110 individual ponytails to benefit Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. All Hopewell Elementary students, grades pre-K to 5th attended a whole school meeting to kick-off the day's festivities and witness the initial big "chop" of all the donors.  Hopewell Elementary School's art room was transformed into a salon for the day, where all donors later returned for an appointment with a licensed hair stylist.  This memorable and inspiring event would not have been possible without Friends Salon, located at 46 E. Broad St. in Hopewell Borough, graciously volunteering their services for the day and providing FREE basic haircuts to all donors.  Special thanks also to Pennington Bagel for generously donating breakfast for our brave participants to enhance the overall event experience.  The event hoped to inspire and encourage even the littlest people to make a difference in someone's life and look beyond themselves.

Hopewell Elementary School & Locks of Love

09/24/2012

On Friday September 14th, students at Hopewell Elementary School were excited to learn of a new school-wide initiative to benefit Locks of Love. Students listened to a presentation and video, which followed the journey of two school-aged girls through the hair donation process.  Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides vacuum fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss for various medical reasons.  Now through October 31st, students, faculty, families, and community members are encouraged to "pledge" to participate in a "ponytail event", slated for June 2013.  Students, faculty, families, and community members will have 9 months to grow their hair to donate to children in need and to help restore self-esteem and confidence, enabling these children to face the world and their peers.  Certain guidelines apply to become a hair donor and those individuals who are unable to donate, but would like to participate, will have the opportunity to assist in fundraising to offset hairpiece manufacturing costs.
To view hair donation guidelines please visit: http://www.locksoflove.org/donate.html
To participate or if you are a stylist or salon owner wanting to volunteer for our "ponytail event" in June 2013, please contact Michelle Brennan (michellelbrennan@yahoo.com) or Sue Dayner (suedayner@yahoo.com).
