DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach courses in Art including, but not limited to, Gallery Design and Exhibition, Introduction to Art, and Art History. Manage the Art Gallery and the permanent art collection which will include:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in fine arts, art, or art history; OR
Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in humanities; OR
Valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area; OR
The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education,
training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the
required degree(s) and experience in the field as determined by the District
Equivalency Committee.

SALARY
The initial salary placement range is $55,380 - $83,844 depending on applicable
education and experience. Initial salary placement will be determined by the
District Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective
bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.

Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds for the purpose of facilitating the attainment of their academic or vocational objectives.

The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full time tenure track faculty position in the Illustration Department.
The FIT Illustration Department aspires to expand its program in the application of illustration to moving image media such as film, TV, videogames, the Internet and beyond. Our strategy includes launching a new sequence of courses that will emphasize the use of illustration in contemporary mass media. The college seeks an illustration professional with the unique combination of knowledge, skill, imagination and experience that is supportive of this new direction for our program. This exciting opportunity is ideal for an accomplished professional who possesses a command of the discipline, an intimate knowledge of the illustration field and its markets, and an informed and coherent vision for its future.
The candidate should be a top illustration professional who is willing to be an integral part of developing and implementing strategic goals for additional courses in contemporary media beyond those currently in place. The candidate must be able to work in interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments across the college, including the recently established Film and Media Program. Responsibilities will include revising, designing and authoring curricula, delivering instruction, and participating in researching and identifying potential funding sources, writing grants and participating in other administrative activities as needed. These tasks will include monitoring competitive academic programs, tracking industry trends and practices, and suggesting program improvements to meet the changing needs of the global marketplace. In addition to possessing superior professional abilities, the candidate must demonstrate interest or experience in teaching, training, and instruction, must display a passion and knowledge of the field, and must possess the ability to convey that excitement and vision to others.
Requirements:
• A 4-year undergraduate degree preferably in graphic arts, along with a minimum of (6) six years of professional experience in illustration and/or in the animation/special visual effects field are required.
• A Master's degree in graphic arts or in education or their equivalent is preferred. Experience in post-secondary teaching is also desirable.
Strong preference will be given to candidates exhibiting several or all of the listed competencies.
Additional Information:
The candidate will be expected to, along with possessing the appropriate degree(s) and career experience, who has professional level capabilities in the following five college-wide core competency areas:
• Technology Competency: As an expert in multimedia applications, the candidate should demonstrate the effective use of technology and electronic information systems in the studio and classroom environments. This should include the ability to inspire students' imaginations, to train students in further developing traditional as well as digital illustration proficiencies—such as drawing, painting and conceptualization skills—and to integrate those skills in a manner consistent with current industry needs and standards.
• Instructional Design Competency: Design classroom and other learning experiences that foster critical thinking, advance problem-solving capabilities, and that challenge and enhance information literacy skills and creativity. He/she must demonstrate the willingness and ability to learn and utilize a variety of instructional delivery methods to improve student learning including all current major digital presentation and information systems (e.g., PowerPoint, Angel, etc.). The candidate must also be willing and capable of demonstrating drawing and painting techniques from direct observation, to instruct in the use of all relevant software, to conduct effective lectures, discussions and critiques, and be able to guide students in the use of the web, online and traditional libraries and other reading and research sources.
• Professionalism Competency: The candidate must have an understanding and mastery of established and emerging industry practices and their relevance to the illustration markets as they apply to film, TV, commercials, animation, comic books, graphic novels, videogames and other popular mass media venues. This would include proficiency in critical visual/narrative techniques commonly used in film, videogames, comics and graphic novels, such as storyboarding and character development, and maquette and scratch model building and the ability to provide instruction in these areas. The candidate should also be able to provide guidance in advanced research procedures and prognostic techniques to aid students in working from both reference and from their imaginations. His/her expertise should extend to the application of entrepreneurial skills, to a comprehensive understanding of copyright and other laws pertaining to intellectual properties, and should include a current knowledge of billing practices, asset management, marketing and promotional procedures.
• Learning Enrichment Competency: Embrace the emerging roles of faculty members as facilitators and mentors of information and knowledge, and must demonstrate an ability to guide students in the integration, synthesizing, and utilization of such acquired knowledge and skills for use in various imaging-related and narrative disciplines, including filmmaking, animation, writing, designing, photography, social sciences, history and art history.
• Globalism Competency: Proficient in the skills necessary to integrate across disciplinary domains, to maintain awareness of international affairs that relate to his or her areas of specialization, and to demonstrate a willingness to become familiar with basic industry practices on a global scale. This should include an inclination to understand international laws and practices that pertain to the protection, management, exploitation and utilization of intellectual properties.

The candidate should be a top illustration professional who is willing to be an integral part of developing and implementing strategic goals for additional courses in contemporary media beyond those currently in place. The candidate must be able to work in interdisciplinary collaborations with other departments across the college, including the recently established Film and Media Program. • Learning Enrichment Competency: Embrace the emerging roles of faculty members as facilitators and mentors of information and knowledge, and must demonstrate an ability to guide students in the integration, synthesizing, and utilization of such acquired knowledge and skills for use in various imaging-related and narrative disciplines, including filmmaking, animation, writing, designing, photography, social sciences, history and art history.
• Globalism Competency: Proficient in the skills necessary to integrate across disciplinary domains, to maintain awareness of international affairs that relate to his or her areas of specialization, and to demonstrate a willingness to become familiar with basic industry practices on a global scale. This should include an inclination to understand international laws and practices that pertain to the protection, management, exploitation and utilization of intellectual properties.
