Unit: Heroes
Triptych – Mixed Media/Technology
Materials: Objectives:
Students: Select a person (or persons) who has made a
positive influence over the world.
You must be able to document how the person has made a
positive impact on the world. Rap
music celebrities and wrestlers will not be accepted. Collect collage materials that could be
used as backgrounds (landscapes, photocopies, magazine cut outs). The center - or focal point of your
triptych (the middle panel) will have a photograph or painting of your
person. The two side panels should
represent their contributions in some way
(or other people associated with them). This will involve some out of class work to find
materials. The teacher may enlarge
small photographs using the photocopier.

1.
Video short -- Explorers- The Age of Discovery (from Northwest
Technology Center)
2.
Slides
of Renaissance triptychs - showing themes and framing details
3.
Demonstrations
of each step
Procedure:
1.
Paint
or collage background for central panel.
This could be a landscape to relate to your explorer, crowds of people
to relate to the sports hero, inventions of your inventor… Anything that
would relate to your person in some way.
2.
Paint
or collage the photograph of your selected person in central panel. You may use an actual photograph if you
have one the correct size.
3.
You
will try some glazing techniques (similar to the Renaissance artists) by applying
paint that has been thinned with gloss medium over your collage work to make
it appear like a painting.
4.
Collage
or paint - or a combination of both - images that would relate to your
individual on both side panels of the triptych. The side panels could be
things contributed to the rest of the world from the country explored (if
doing an explorer)-- inventions of greatest importance if doing an inventor.
5.
Build
up a frame around all three panels using cardboard. Paint frame with acrylic paint and accent with puffy paints
6.
Decorate
the backside of the two side panels. Framing on these panels is optional, but
it would add to the appearance if you made a matching frame. You may collage
the backside of the center panel, if you wish. Students doing explorers may
collage a large map on back.

Grade Agenda
1. Finish
collecting collage materials for triptych.
Your images should relate to the person you have selected. This is a narrative piece - that is, it
should tell a story with pictures.
Wallpaper may be used for background; strips may be collaged onto
cardboard for frames. You will not
need to find addition collage materials for the back of your triptych. You will need to collage and /or paint
images on the back of the side panels.
The back of the center may be painted to match the frame – or glue a
biography (map for explorers will do)
2. Develop a
rough plan on white paper (do not glue images to the paper). The inside of the center panel should
feature the portrait. The side panels
should relate to the accomplishments (One side must be the positive
influence, in your opinion. Remember,
to a large group of people, Christopher Columbus impacted negatively. Your work may reflect the down side of the
"discovery")
PLAN SHEETS ARE DUE TUESDAY FOR A
GRADE. Be sure to list any additional
collage materials that will be needed.
Some of them I may have. You
are responsible for bringing in anything that is not covered by art
fees. See the lesson sheets for list
of supplies that your fee will cover.
3. Begin to
glue down background with Mod-Podge Gloss Medium. Brush glue onto wood with foam brush. Brush glue to back of image.
Smooth onto board. ALLOW TO
DRY BEFORE BRUSHING GLUE OVER THE TOP SURFACE.
4. Cut out
images NEATLY. Apply images in the
same manner.
5. When glue
has dried, brush gloss medium over entire surface. Use caution when brushing
over computer images.
6. Paint
over desired images with a thin glaze of color. Mix acrylic paint with gloss medium. Try to create contrast with paints. Remember to develop a color plan. Paint over portrait with
highlights and shadows. Do not get the paint opaque. The photocopy or computer print should
show through.
7. Some
areas of triptych could be painted.
You must gesso the board before painting. Draw ideas on plan sheet and transfer to board using carbon
paper.
